RONKONKOMA, N.Y. - The westbound Long Island Expressway was shut down in Ronkonkoma because of an accident involving a Suffolk County Sheriff's vehicle.
Wednesday night between exits 59 and 60 in the westbound lanes of the Long Island Expressway there was traffic as far as the eye can see.
Bumper to bumper not moving, might as well get gas," said Justin Ngia, a motorist.
It's been a long wait for motorists, most of whom have no idea what caused the delay.
It was a tragic accident.
Shortly before 6 p.m., an 18-year-old man for some unknown reason stopped his car in the HOV lane.
According to investigators, a sheriff's deputy in a marked vehicle on routine patrol saw the 2011 Mazda and tried to swerve to avoid it.
But, according to authorities the sheriff's deputy says he was blinded by the glare of the sun and ended up crashing into the vehicle, killing the 18-year-old.
Investigators spent several hours at the scene, shutting down part of the highway and diverting traffic.
The Eastbound lanes of the LIE were not affected, but the accident scene disrupted westbound traffic for most of the evening.
