A 5-month-old baby has been hospitalized in serious condition for more than a week at the Soroka Medical center in Beersheba. Police suspect her 23-year-old uncle had caused this condition by shaking her and arrested him on Wednesday.
A physician in Soroka said bruises were also found on the baby's twin sister. "An examination of the baby raised suspicions of foul play. Due to these findings, we asked to examine her twin sister and found bruises on her body as well," Dr. Michal Meimon said.
The father told Ynet that the baby had stopped breathing last week while being looked after by his wife's sister and her husband. She was rushed to hospital and was at one point in critical condition.
Police questioned the parents, who were released without restrictions, as well as the one of the grandmothers. They were told not to make any contact with the suspect and his wife.
Police sources said the suspect has linked himself to the case.
"I have no doubt this happened as a result of what he did. The doctors told me it was caused by shaking so it can only be them (the suspect and his wife)."
Two months ago, two 4-month-old twins were admitted into the Chaim Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer after allegedly being shaken by their parents.
One of the babies died several days later and police launched an investigation as part of which the two parents were arrested.
The two were eventually released to house arrest, but the investigation is still ongoing.
