SALT LAKE CITY, Utah -- Kidnap victim Elizabeth Smart is engaged to be married, a family spokesman told the Deseret News Friday.
Smart, who was taken at knifepoint from her parents' Salt Lake City home in 2002 at age 14 and held captive for nine months, became engaged last weekend to a man the family declined to identify.
The family is hoping to schedule the wedding for this summer.
"She has planned to be very public in her child advocacy work but wants to keep the details of her personal life private," spokesman Chris Thomas told the Deseret News.
Smart, 24, is "happy and excited for this next chapter in her life," he said.
She was found in March 2003 when an alert biker, who had heard about the kidnapping on "America's Most Wanted," spotted her in Sandy, Utah, about 18 miles from her home.
Smart was in the company of Brian David Mitchell and his wife, Wanda Barzee, at the time of her discovery.
Mitchell was sentenced to life in prison in May 2011 after being convicted of kidnapping and rape. Barzee had earlier pleaded guilty to federal charges of kidnapping and unlawful transportation of a minor and is serving a 15-year prison sentence.
