BOSTON - The Israeli Consulate in Boston was on lock-down for hours on Monday after two envelopes with the word “anthrax” were found in the building.
The hazmat scare at the consulate which is located on Columbus Avenue prompted police and fire crews to lock-down the building, as well as the surrounding area.
The incident was upgraded to a Level 2 hazmat after the two envelopes which were addressed to the consulate were found to have a residue on the outside and contained powder inside.
Officials from the consulate told FOX 25 that there were no special events or meetings being held on Monday. There are approximately 20 workers in the building.
After further investigation, officials determined that the bold anthrax attempt mailed from New York with a presumably bogus name was a hoax. The envelopes did not pose an immediate threat, and local and Federal authorities continue to investigate.
Despite the intimidation tactic, the agency is not concerned and has confidence in the emergency personnel and their training.
