The FAA says a small plane with two people on board crashed into the Moriches Inlet on Long Island Saturday afternoon.
According to the FAA, the single engine plane went down around 3:06 p.m. off Fire Island by Moriches Inlet after departing Spadaro Airport in East Moriches. The plane is submerged and recovery efforts are ongoing with a Suffolk County diver in the water.
Authorities say the recovery effort has been difficult due to the position of the plane door.
People in boats near the crash site were allegedly jumping out of their vessels to help the passengers in the plane.
Authorities say one male and one female are on board the plane and the Globe Swift aircraft is about 15 feet at the bottom of Moriches Inlet. The plane has suffered moderate damage.
The Suffolk County police say rescue efforts will continue into the evening.
