Rockland County, NY - Even as the East Ramapo school district finds itself on the verge of bankruptcy and the threat of school layoffs loom, public school parents and the Orthodox Jewish community continue to wage war, trading barbs and accusations, and refusing to come to a consensus about the future of the school district.
The stalemate is a result of a federal class-action lawsuit brought this past summer by over 200 parents against the school board administrators and members. In the suit, the plaintiffs allege that their state and federal constitutional rights were violated by the defendants when funding for white students was allocated for their private schools, while funding for the mostly Hispanic and black students who attend public schools was reduced.
