MONTICELLO - Village police confirmed Tuesday that they charged Mayor Gordon Jenkins with a misdemeanor and a violation, saying he threw a punch at another man and hit a police officer during an incident at his store.
Acting police Chief Mark Johnstone said the incident began about 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, when Jenkins and his wife, Rochelle Massey, called to report two people causing a disturbance at Jenkins’ shop, G-Man Beauty Supplies, on Broadway. Johnstone said officers cleared Daryl Fowler, 53, and Faye Brown, 43, of Monticello out of the store.
Johnstone said the dispute flared up again as officers spoke to Fowler and Brown on the sidewalk and Jenkins came outside. Johnstone said Jenkins took a swing at Fowler, but hit the back of Officer Dave Weiner’s head. Johnstone said Weiner went to a doctor for neck and head soreness, and will be out of work for a week.
Jenkins was charged with obstructing governmental administration, a misdemeanor, and disorderly conduct, a violation.
Fowler was charged with obstructing governmental administration, a misdemeanor, and disorderly conduct, trespass and harassment, all violations. Brown was charged with trespass, harassment and disorderly conduct, all violations.
Johnstone said Jenkins did not intend to hit the officer, but it’s not something police take lightly. There was no answer at Jenkins’ cell phone number Tuesday evening.
