A woman plunged to her death Tuesday from a lower Manhattan office building, police said.
The body of the unidentified 54-year-old was found just before 6 a.m. outside 80 Maiden Lane, a 25-story tower in the Financial District.
Police said it wasn't immediately clear whether the woman jumped or fell, but said the incident appeared "non-criminal in nature."
The woman, who lived in Brooklyn, worked for the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty, officials there said. They would not comment on the death until the woman's family was notified.
The body was left on the sidewalk covered with a blanket for more than five hours as morning commuters walked by.
The same building made headlines in March after a construction crane collapsed, smashing into the 23rd floor.

A nurse depressed about her personal life jumped to her death from her 10th-floor lower Manhattan office yesterday -- leaving behind a note saying, "I just can't take it anymore," police and sources said.
Caroline Kenny -- a 53-year-old, unmarried RN devoted to her work but with little outside life -- landed on the sidewalk in front of 80 Maiden Lane at around 6 a.m., police said. She was found by a building security guard.
A co-worker at the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty said that upon turning 50, Kenny was "kind of going through this, 'Where am I going? What am I doing?' "
Met Council CEO William Rapfogel said Kenny had worked for the agency since 1985, training nurses -- "and was terrific at it."
Too many sad souls. So many people need help emotionally, too many bad things in people's lives
ReplyDeleteSomething is seriously wrong and inhumane about leaving her for FIVE HOURS on the cold wet dirty ground and allowing commuters and tourists to gawk the whole while. I have never heard of something like this. I thought the first thing cops did was take the pics needed, tape off the area, etc. and then get the body out asap. WTF happened here??!!!
