NY: Shomrim Nab Synagogue Taggers

Synagogue taggers busted

Four graffiti taggers nabbed near Marine Park Junior High School by the Shomrim patrol on Jan. 29 have been connected to an act of vandalism on a nearby synagogue that took place more than two months ago, police said.

Police said that members of the neighborhood watch were on patrol at 10 pm when they saw the teens writing the words “Sap” and “Ams” on the sidewalk near the corner of Avenue T and Stuart Street.

Shomrim members kept an eye on the teens as they called 911 and reported the vandalism. Cops from the 61st Precinct crept up on the vandals a short time later, catching them red-handed.

Investigators later learned that one of the tags was left on Congregation Kahl Bnei Torah of Marine Park, which is near the corner of Avenue S and E. 36th Street, in Nov., 2010 and added the synagogue vandalism to the taggers’ lists of charges, officials said.

Eagle eyes

After a 92-year-old man vanished on Jan. 28, two perspicacious 63rd Precinct detectives helped locate the man the following day when they realized that the senior’s car was rolling right past them in lower Manhattan.

Police said that Rudolph Lee, a resident of E. 49th Street near Avenue J, had gotten into his green 2007 Toyota Yaris at 11 am on Jan. 28 and drove off.

Panicked family members called police when several hours had gone by and Lee didn’t return, claiming that the frail senior was on a host of medications he needed to take at regular intervals.

A missing person search went through the night to no avail.

But at 1:45 am the next day, Detectives Daniel Callow and Luis Sanchez, who were spearheading the case, were leaving 1 Police Plaza after putting out an alert on the missing senior when they saw his green Yaris near the Brooklyn Bridge.

The detectives approached the car and found Lee inside — confused, but in good health.

The senior had apparently driven out of Brooklyn and was trying to return when he got lost, cops said.

Cabbie bruisers busted

A young couple was arrested on Jan. 27 after dining and ducking from a Sheepshead Bay Applebee’s, then jumping a cabbie they flagged down to take them from the scene.

Employees at the Knapp Street restaurant said that the 20-year-old man and the 21-year-old woman ordered food, but fled without paying for it.

They then flagged down a cab driver, who they attacked on Ralph Avenue between Glenwood and Farragut roads.

In between punches, the cabbie begged the couple not to hurt him and offered them money, said police, who arrested the couple a short time later.

Snow plow

A 47-year-old motorist was arrested on drunk driving charges on Jan. 30 after he nearly caused a multiple car pile up on the Belt Parkway.

Witnesses said that the motorist was heading east-bound between Exits 11 and 13 when he was seen changing lanes without signaling and swerving away to prevent a collision.

In doing so, he nearly struck the median and a pile of snow, said cops, who ultimately pulled the driver over without incident and took him into custody.

Sidekick swipe

A sticky-fingered student snagged a T-Mobile Sidekick cellphone from a classmate’s locker inside Marine Park Junior High School on Jan. 28.

The 14-year-old victim left the phone inside her locker at the Stuart Street school at 10:21 am, but found it gone when she returned to get it an hour later.

Door kicker sought

A thief kicked in the door to an E. 56th Street home on Jan. 13, but ended up taking nothing.

The homeowner, who lives near Avenue H, said that the break-in took place at 12:30 pm.

More door entries

Someone forced his way into an E. 58th Street home on Jan. 14, taking $260 and a cellphone.

The thief entered the home sometime after 6 am, the 31-year-old homeowner near Avenue H told police.
