Dr Raymond Severt

A 53-year-old orthopedic surgeon was arrested in Novato on allegations he tried to meet a 13-year-old girl for sex, police said Tuesday.

Raymond Severt, a Santa Rosa resident, was booked into Marin County Jail on suspicion of attempted lewd and lascivious acts, contacting a minor with intent to commit a sexual offense and attempted child molestation.

He was released on bail pending a review by the district attorney's office.

The investigation began when police received information that a man was sending sexually explicit messages to the girl and had arranged to meet her Monday evening, said Novato police Detective Sgt. Michael Howard.

Investigators intercepted the suspect at about 6:15 p.m. in the area of South Novato Boulevard and Gateway Court. Police identified him as Severt.

The suspect initially met the girl in an online chat room, said Novato police Lt. Jennifer Welch.

The investigation is continuing.

Severt could not immediately be reached for comment through his office.

According to the state medical board, Severt earned his medical degree in 1986 at the University of California, Los Angeles. The medical board has no record of administrative or legal disciplinary action against him.
