Teams of federal agents, state police and local cops busted through the doors of at least three houses in Newburgh, N.Y., Tuesday morning and arrested several people who they said are connected to gangs and street crimes in the city.
Federal authorities said the arrests are the result of a 32-count indictment charging 20 members and associates of the Bloods street gang in Newburgh.
The indictment includes murder charges against several alleged gang members. The charges are the first connected to the killings of Lamont Young and Tyrik Legette, two men who were killed in separate incidents in 2009.
Several charges of attempted murder and conspiracy to murder members of rival gangs are also included in the indictment, along with charges related to racketeering, robbery, narcotics and firearms.
Tuesday's raid began about 6 a.m. as SWAT teams in black SUVs raced into city neighborhoods. Law enforcement agents in green fatigues and helmets carried assault rifles as small teams hit each location simultaneously.
They arrested people in at least two of the locations. After the initial action, evidence recovery teams spent the next several hours photographing inside and collecting items in brown paper bags and boxes, which they then removed.
The raid is believed to be connected to two previous raids that targeted street gangs in Newburgh. More than 80 people were charged in raids in May 2010 and February 2011.
