FL - Jewish Inmate In Florida Issues Second Request For Circumcision

Milton, FL - After his first request was rejected, a Jewish inmate has sent a second request to the Florida Department of Corrections asking that he be allowed to be circumcised by a mohel in the prison’s infirmary.

The SUN-SENTINAL Reports that a Miami organization, Brit Yosef Yitchak, who claims to have performed 50,000 circumcisions world-wide, has offered to perform the ritual free-of-charge for Pablo Maniel Diaz, 37, a Cuban-born Jewish inmate at the Blackwater Correctional Facility if permission is granted.

Diaz is represented by law students Paul Harold and Courtney Quiros through Stanford University Law School’s Religious Liberty Clinic in California.

Harold and Quiros have given the DOC until mid-June to respond to their client’s request.

Florida’s DOC recently lost a federal court appeal brought about by a Jewish inmate who claimed the DOC refused to provide kosher meals for religious reasons.

The United States Department of Justice is also currently suing the Florida DOC over the same issue.
