State comptroller receives complaint on Rabbi Ovadia Yosef

Letter sent to Micha Lindenstrauss accuses Shas of trying to take over rabbinate esatablishement in 'borderline criminal' ways

A document sent to State Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss accuses Shas of trying to monopolize Israel's rabbinate establishment in borderline criminal ways, Yedioth Ahronoth reported Friday. The document was written by one of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef's associates.

Minister of Religious Services Yakov Margi was appointed in order to promote the appointment of members of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef's family and associates of Shas leaders to senior positions in Israeli rabbinates.

The man behind the appointments is Rabbi Moshe Yosef, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef's son and a powerful player in Shas. He also heads the private Beit Yaakov Orthodox court (Badatz) which makes millions in the kashrut industry. "These appointments were meant to promote Badatz in large cities.

The document also specifies a line of appointment and actions which its author says are borderline criminal. Rabbi Ovadia Yosef's son-in-law was reportedly appointed Modiin-Maccabim-Reut rabbi with the help of Minister Margi.

It is also claimed that Shas tried to appoint Rabbi Moshe Yosef's brother as Jerusalem chief rabbi with the backing of Israel Chief Rabbi Shlomo Amar. Margi apparently pushed one of the electing committee members to recommend the appointment in exchange for appointing his son as head if Hadera's religious council.

The State Comptroller's Office confirmed they had received the letter by Labor MK Eitan Kabel. It is being examined.

A source close to Rabbi Ovadia Yosef said in response: "Rabbi Moshe Yosef does not interfere with anything, he only works as Rabbi Ovadia Yosef's emissary."
