Photo of Ruti Fogel blurred for modesty

The censured picture

Religious Zionism center Meir Institute publishes weekly bulletin with photo slain family, but blurs face of mother due to policy forbidding publication of women's photos. 'Mistake caused by human error, our apologizes,' states center

Machon Meir (Meir Institute), a Jerusalem-based religious Zionism center, published in their weekly bulletin a photo of the Fogel family members – who were brutally murdered 11 months ago in Itamar – but blurred the face of the mother, Ruti Fogel, due to the institute's policy that forbids to publish women's pictures.

The well known and veteran pamphlet, which is distributed in many synagogues around the country, published the picture ahead of a memorial ceremony that will be held in their honor.

The picture features the father and mother, Udi and Ruti, and three of their children: Yoav, Elad and Hadas. Under the picture, it reads: "God will remember them among the other righteous people in the world."

Ruti's father, Rabbi Yehuda Ben-Yishai, teaches at the institution, which is affiliated with the relatively conservative stream of religious Zionism. Many religious media outlets do not publish women's pictures, and in extreme cases don't even mention women's names. Other pamphlets publish women's names only when they have fallen victim to terror attacks.

Machon Meir stated in response: "The 'In love and faith' bulletin is a religious bulletin distributed and read inside synagogues. Therefore, its policy is not to publish women's photos. The publication of this ad in such a way was a human error and did not mean to offend anyone. The institute apologized to the family, and the family accepted its apology."

The Fogel family refused to comment on the affair.
