Miami, FL - Muslim inmates in Florida are asking to join a
federal lawsuit filed on behalf of Jewish prisoners demanding that the state
Department of Corrections provide kosher meals.
Attorneys for the Muslim prisoners say they are unable to
get halal meals, which are those prepared under Islamic law. The Muslims say
they would also accept the kosher diet as an alternative.
A Miami federal judge is holding a hearing Tuesday on
whether to order Florida prison officials to serve kosher meals for Jewish
prisoners who qualify.
The Muslims say they should be treated equally and want
to join in that lawsuit, filed by the U.S. Justice Department’s Civil Rights
Division.
Prison officials have restarted the kosher meals program,
but federal officials want a court order to guarantee it stays in place.
