FORT WORTH, Texas -- A Fort Worth jury sentenced a convicted sex offender to 50 years in prison for failing to register -- but that was quite a bit better than the penalty he was hoping for.
Daniel Ostrander, 45, was released from prison in 2010 after serving most of a 25-year sentence for the sexual assault of a child.
But just before he was scheduled to meet with authorities and register as a sex offender, Ostrander cut off his GPS tracking device and left his halfway house.
About two months later he turned himself in to police because he said he was tired of being homeless.
During his trial, Ostrander reportedly told jurors, "If you give me anything else than 99 years I will think you're weak."
In the end jurors Thursday sentenced him to 50 years. He faced 25 years to life in prison because of his past history.
