NY: 4 killed after small plane crashes just short of Westchester County Airport

4 people were confirmed dead after the small plane they were aboard crashed just short of a Westchester County Airport runway Saturday, officials said.

Authorities believe a fourth victim may have been inside the Cessna 210 Centurion when it crashed just after 1 p.m., officials said.

The single-prop plane had just taken off from runway 34, when it reported an emergency to the control tower, said Holly Baker, spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration.

"The pilot advised that he had to return to Westchester County," Baker said. "He was trying to return and the plane went down just short of runway 16."

The plane was based at Panorama Flight Service and was scheduled to fly Montauk, officials said.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known.

Baker said the FAA plans to investigate.

The NTSB has also been notified, officials said.
