Howell, NJ - Lakewood Girl, 6, in ICU after Head On Crash by Drunk

Howell, NJ - A township man was drunk when he drove a sport utility vehicle head-on into a minivan carrying six children Thursday night, police said.

Bernard Stancheck, 43, was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe west on Arnold Boulevard around 6:49 p.m. when the vehicle entered the eastbound lane and struck a 2006 Dodge Caravan being driven by Esther Wolfson, 39, of Lakewood, according to Detective Sgt. Eileen Dodd.

Wolfson was carrying six children ranging in age from 1 to 8 years old when the collision occurred, Dodd addded.

Stancheck, Wolfson and all six children were taken to Jersey Shore University Hospital in Neptune. Both drivers and a 6-year-old girl were admitted for their injuries. Dodd explained.

The 6-year-old was admitted with severe head trauma and remained in the pediatric intensive care unit at the hospital Friday morning, Dodd said.

Stancheck is charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, failure to maintain a lane, operating an unregistered vehicle and failure to wear a seat belt, and additional charges may be forthcoming pending the outcome of the investigation, Dodd said.

The Monmouth County Serious Collision Analysis Response Team, Ramtown Fire Company, Howell Police EMS Unit, Howell, Lakewood and Hatzolah first aid squads and MONOC paramedics all responded.

Anyone with information is asked to call Patrolman Peter Hochhauser at 732-938-4111.
