Connecticut - A large swastika was sprayed on a synagogue in Waterbury and now police are investigating it as a hate crime.
The vandalism caught the attention of Sen. Richard Blumenthal, who visited the site on Tuesday to make it clear these crimes not tolerable.
The swastika was found earlier this week and has already been removed from the side of the building, but it still has a lot of the residents in the area shaken up.
A worker sanded off the huge swastika that someone sprayed onto the side of the Waterbury synagogue sometime over the past few days.
Police are calling it a hate crime and are looking for any leads on who may be responsible.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal got wind of the vandalism and wanted to meet with members of the synagogue.
“An act of hatred like this one is not a prank,” Blumenthal said. “It can’t be regarded as prank and should be apprehended as a criminal action.”
Police are investigating to see if video from any of the nearby buildings caught the vandals in the act.
Spraying symbols like the swastika is considered a federal offense, and police said they have notified the FBI.
