Yitzhak Rabin, the Jordanian named 18 years ago after
Israel's former prime minister, will be joining the ranks of the Israeli army,
the daily Maariv reported on Wednesday.
Following Rabin's assassination in 1995, Jordanian farmer
Rajai Saeed and his wife decided to name their infant child after the Israeli
premier. At first the state registrar refused to approve the infant's Jewish
name, but changed its position after the Interior Minister said the request was
legal.
But following protracted harassment in Jordan, Yitzhak Rabin
Namsy's family moved to Israel, where they have been living almost his entire
life. Israeli citizenship, however, remained a challenge for the family.
According to the report, Rabin's dream to become a citizen
finally came true this week, when Interior Minister Gideon Sa'ar personally
traveled to Eilat to present him with the blue Israeli ID card.
