N.Y. - It was standing room only Tuesday in a
Manhattan federal courtroom as multitudes of ultra-Orthodox Jews showed up to
hear arguments over the city’s controversial parental consent rule regarding
the circumcision ritual of metzitzah b’peh, or, MBP.
THE NEW YORK DAILY NEWS reports that a federal judge upheld
the law last January, siding with city lawyers who cited 11 cases of infant
boys contracting herpes from the ritual.
Lawyers for the ultra-Orthodox community—-which is appealing
the January ruling—-argued that the current rule is in violation of free speech
and religious rights laws because mohels are being forced to to enact upon
ultra-Orthodox parents forms they dispute.
Attorneys for the city argued to the contrary, saying that
the rule in essence expands religious freedoms, while at the same time
protecting children.
