Florida - Jews insulted By Menorah lighting Ceremony Then Receive Anonymous Note

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. -  Gerry Franciosa is disgusted by the hurtful mail someone sent to his wife Tuesday. The sender is anonymous.

"To me this is someone without a spine, a coward, especially signing anonymous. And my wife, she feels threatened by this," said Franciosa.

On a post-it note it reads, "Very comical. It is what you are. Go to Israel."

The note came in response to a letter-to-the-editor Gerry's wife wrote in the Palm Beach Post. She had expressed her disappointment over the menorah lighting ceremony last Wednesday. She claims it did not keep with Jewish tradition.

"There were a lot of things missing. It was a very quick ceremony, they lit the candle and everyone left," said Franciosa.

City Commissioner Adam Frankel, who is Jewish, agrees the ceremony was mishandled.

"There's no question there was a disservice to our local Jewish families and children in Delray Beach," said Frankel.

Even Mayor Cary Glickstein admitted in a meeting Tuesday night that he "dropped the ball on this one."

But the fact that the hurtful letter followed has Gerry second guessing his neighbors.

"When you're in America, in a community as diverse as Delray Beach, you don't expect this," said Franciosa.

Gerry says he plans to alert the Anti-Defamation League about the note. The ADL tracks all incidents that could be considered anti-Semitism to help make the community aware of it.
