Rabbi Returns From California To Face Sex Abuse Charges In Brooklyn

NEW YORK – A rabbi has returned to New York from California to face felony sex abuse charges.

Menachem Tewel, 30, who also goes by Mendel Tevel, is accused of abusing a young man for several months six years ago in Crown Heights, 1010 WINS’ Juliet Papa reported.

Tewel, who is originally from Brooklyn, was arrested last week in Beverly Hills, Calif. where he works at a Jewish youth community center.

Tewel pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in Brooklyn on Friday. Bail has been set at $100,000.

Meyer Seewald of Jewish Community Watch, a group that looks into abuse allegations, praises the accuser for coming forward.

“He doesn’t want what happened to him for another child to endure,” Seewald said. “The community is not aware and we’re trying to bring awareness to protect kids.”

Sources said at least two other cases are under investigation, Papa reported.

Tewel’s wife, who was in court with their 3-month-old daughter, did not comment.
