An Israeli drone crashed inside Gaza territory during
operation activity on Sunday. The IDF said the crash was due to a technical
fault and that the matter is being investigated.
The Palestinian Maan news agency quoted Gaza sources as
saying that terrorists took over the aircraft north of the Jabalya refugee camp
in the northern Strip. It should be noted the drone, the Sky Rider, is the
Artillery Corps' smallest aircraft.
Last May, an Israeli Air Force Hermes 450 drone crashed at
sea off the coast of Ashkelon.
The wreckage was picked up over the last several hours by
the Navy and will be examined in the course of the incident's investigation.
The drone that crashed was in flight as part of an IAF
training. The IDF 's preliminary estimate is that the drone crashed due to a
technical malfunction in the engine.
The Hermes 450 is one of the largest drones the IAF
possesses, which was used in the Second Lebanon War.
Also in May, a Shoval-type drone engaged in routine activity
was shot down over the sea due to an engine malfunction. IAF helicopters
searched for its remains in the sea between Tel Aviv and Netanya.
The IDF stressed this is not the first time the IAF downs a
drone in a controlled manner.
Drones are taking an increasingly larger role in Israeli Air
Force missions.
