LOS ANGELES—State regulators have cited two Orthodox Jewish
groups in Los Angeles for breaking the law by slaughtering chickens as part of
an ancient atonement ritual.
The Los Angeles Times says violation notices were issued on
Friday to the Ohel Moshe synagogue and the outreach organization Bait Aaron.
Steve Lyle of the state Department of Food and Agriculture
says they were operating as unlicensed slaughterhouses.
The decision came after animal rights activists protested
the practice of slaughtering chickens in the days before Friday's Jewish day of
atonement, Yom Kippur. The practice involves believers symbolically
transferring their sins to a chicken, which is killed and the meat distributed
to the poor.
A spokesman for Bait Aaronsays his group will continue the
tradition.
