NYC Child struck and killed by fleeing vehicle


NEW YORK  - A three-year-old girl and her grandmother were struck by a vehicle fleeing from police on the Upper West Side of Manhattan on Tuesday morning.

The girl was killed. Her grandmother was hospitalized in serious condition. The driver of the vehicle is 18-years-old, said police.

The incident occurred just after 8 a.m. at Amsterdam Ave. and West 97th Street.

The teen driver was pulled over for reckless driving on West 89th Street before taking off and crashing into a building.

As the driver backed out of the building, the woman and her granddaughter were struck, said police.

The girl was rushed to St. Luke's Hospital in critical condition where she was pronounced dead a short time later. The grandmother was also brought to St. Luke's for treatment.

The driver was arrested.

The streets around the crime scenes remain closed.
