A man imprisoned for over two decades for the murder of a rabbi in Brooklyn is scheduled to be released tomorrow after an investigation into his conviction, authorities said today.
David Ranta, convicted in 1991 for the murder of Rabbi Chaskel Werzberger, will be released tomorrow afternoon after a Brooklyn Supreme Court proceeding, according to a spokesman for the Brooklyn District Attorney.
The Brooklyn DA’s conviction integrity unit handled the investigation into Ranta’s conviction and prosecution.
“It was a cumulative effect of the recanting by witnesses and the going over of the trial transcripts and interviewing other people involved in the case,” said DA spokesman Jerry Schmetterer, adding that the recanted testimony of a convicted rapist played a large part.
The attorney representing Ranta declined to comment on the case.
In 1990 prosecutors charged Ranta with killing Werzberger after a bungled jewelry robbery because he wanted the rabbi’s car to get away.
