NY - United flight delayed after pilot stuck at HOV checkpoint

A United flight 397 from Kennedy Airport to San Francisco missed its 8 a.m. departure window today and has been stuck on the tarmac because the pilot was stuck in NYC traffic.

The captain, who is based in San Francisco, was staying at a tony midtown Manhattan hotel and was unable to get off the island because he was the only passenger in his "ground transportation."

Passengers were understandably freaked.

"We woke up at 4:30 a.m. to make this flight! All the passengers got here on time-it's a fully booked flight," said Elise Kim who was hoping to make it out for her destination wedding in Maui.

Passengers were finally allowed to disembark but were advised to hold on to their boarding passes and stay close to the gate in case the pilot was eventually able to get to the airport.
