The ex-controller of Bernard Madoff's investment firm pleaded guilty Thursday to charges related to the $65 billion Ponzi fraud.
Irwin Lipkin, 74, copped a plea in Manhattan Federal Court to conspiracy to commit securities fraud and falsifying records.
He faces 10 years in prison as part of a plea deal with prosecutors. His sentencing date is March 22.
Lipkin, who was Madoff's first employee 1964 and retired in 1998, said at no time before he retired was he ever aware of Madoff's massive Ponzi scheme. "I am truly sorry that I contributed in any way to the massive harm done to so many innocent victims," he said in court.
He is the ninth Madoff employee to plead guilty to charges related to the Ponzi scheme. His son, Eric Lipkin, also pleaded guilty.
Madoff was charged with the decades-long fraud in 2008. He pleaded guilty in 2009 and received a 150-year prison sentence.
