BROOKLYN — Authorities are investigating Hurricane Sandy-related scams in Brooklyn.
The Brooklyn District Attorney’s office is looking into complaints of price gouging and other illegal business practices during and after the storm, DA Charles Hynes announced Thursday.
A special Rackets Grand Jury will investigate complaints about hotels and gas stations spiking their prices, along with complaints about fake charities defrauding donors, Hynes said.
“The sad truth about a tragedy is that while it brings out the very best in people, it can also bring out the worst,” Hynes said in a statement. “To raise the price of a hotel, as people seek emergency shelter is just unconscionable.”
