Nassau County Police Officer in crash on LIE

A deadly crash on the eastbound Long Island Expressway Thursday morning has forced the closure of all eastbound lanes near Exit 34/New Hyde Park Road.

A Nassau County Police Officer was killed in the collision at about 4:45 a.m.

The officer had gotten out of his patrol car at the scene when he was struck and killed by another vehicle, FOX 5 News has learned.

The officer was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Delays are also extensive on the westbound LIE where there is a heavy police presence. One lane is closed.

It is not clear what lead to the crash.

Police have scheduled a briefing for Noon to update the media on details related to the deadly crash.
