RAMAPO — A father and daughter walking home on Saddle River Road Tuesday night were hit by a van, leaving the man in critical condition and the teenage girl complaining of leg pains, Ramapo police said today.
Nachmen Lefkowitz, 39, underwent emergency surgery at Westchester Medical Center for internal injuries and was listed as critical, Ramapo Detective Lt. Mark Emma said. Lefkowitz also suffered a broken leg.
Lefkowitz and his daughter, Rivky, 16, were walking at 9:27 p.m. when they were hit by a 2006 Ford Free Star van driven by Yehoshua Srulowitz, 26, of Kaser Terrace in the village of Kaser, Emma said. Kaser is a village in the Town of Ramapo.
Emma said he didn’t know yet whether the Lefkowitzes were crossing Saddle River Road or walking in the road when they were hit near Miele Road. They were walking toward Miele Road, where they live, he said.
Hatzoloh Ambulance Corps drove them to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla in Westchester County.
Emma said the area is not well-lit, but the circumstances were being investigated by the police department’s accident investigation unit.
The responding officer also plans to interview the driver. No charges or traffic summonses have been issued.
Tuesday night was the second day of the seven-day celebration of Sukkot, the Feast of Tabernacles. Orthodox Jews are among the religious Jews who don’t drive on holidays and the Sabbath.
