A runaway carriage horse wreaked havoc during the start of rush hour Thursday afternoon, slamming into a van before unhitching itself and running off near Columbus Circle.
Two people were enjoying a ride around the popular tourist spot around 4:20 p.m. when the driver tried to merge into traffic, witnesses said. The carriage clipped the van - spooking the horse and sending it into a frenzy, witnesses and FDNY officials said.
The horse then bucked itself free from the carriage, sending the driver and two passengers spilling into the street, officials and witnesses said.
It took off and galloped toward 10th Avenue before officers from the Midtown North precinct corralled it near W. 57th St.
“It was a little scary seeing a horse running down Ninth Avenue,” said witness Gaelle Paul.
Officers from the NYPD Mounted Unit took the horse back to the stable on W. 52nd St.
The driver and two passengers were taken to local hospitals for a check-up but were not injured, police said.
The horse - who suffered minor scratches - was waiting to be checked out by a veterinarian, said Stephen Malone, president of the Horse and Carriage Association of NYC.
