NEW YORK  - New Jersey authorities say a man died in a car crash after a good Samaritan tried to stop him from sexually assaulting a woman.

The Bergen County Prosecutor's Office said two men picked up a woman in New York City early Tuesday morning to drive her home to the Bronx.

But they instead drove over the George Washington Bridge to New Jersey.

Authorities said the driver got out of the car along the Palisades Parkway in Fort Lee and attempted to sexually assault the woman.

Police say the driver got back in the car after a cab driver tried to stop the assault. They say the man then drove several miles before crashing into a tree in Alpine.

Both the woman and the male passenger were taken to a hospital.
