NJ cop surrenders at Pa. home after 10-hour police standoff

PHILADELPHIA -- A Pennsylvania man who works as a police officer in New Jersey surrendered late Sunday night after barricading himself inside a Philadelphia home for 10 hours and sporadically shooting at officers.

The off-duty cop was identified as 42-year-old Richard Klementovich and the incident took place at the home of his estranged wife in the Philadelphia suburb of Doylestown, The Star-Ledger reported.

The 18-year law enforcement veteran, who was alone in the house, was armed with several rifles, a bulletproof vest, a gas mask and other tactical gear during incident -- which started about 2:00pm and ended with the help of police negotiators at 11:45pm.

Klementovich, a police officer in Clifton Township, N.J., started firing at officers at 1:58pm local time, Pennridge Regional Police Chief Dave Mettin said, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Police had been called to his home on a report of a "neighbor dispute."

His shots struck two police cars and an armed vehicle, and one officer was injured by shrapnel, according to Mettin. Authorities said later that the officer was not seriously hurt.

Neighbors said Klementovich was involved in a divorce battle and sent a text message to his wife earlier Sunday saying he planned to kill himself.

Police urged neighbors to stay in their homes, and Mettin advised reporters to stay away from the scene during the incident.
