Mayor Bloomberg blasts shutdown of PATH for Obama's visit

The Port Authority's decision to suspend PATH service during President Obama's visit to the World Trade Center isn't sitting well with Mayor Bloomberg.

Bloomberg -- who joined Gov. Cuomo and New Jersey Gov. Christie in hosting Obama -- was taken aback when told of the shutdown on his weekly WOR radio show.

"What? The PATH trains didn't run?" the mayor asked when host John Gambling mentioned that PATH service from the WTC station was out for three hours.

Bloomberg noted that the MTA didn't stop the subways.

"The Secret Service wanted it closed," explained Gambling.

"You don't have to say yes," responded Bloomberg. "You know, this is our city."

Port Authority spokesman Steve Coleman defended the temporary shutdown.

"When dealing with the safety and security of the President of the United States and the First Lady, we follow the direction and recommendations of the US Secret Service and the Port Authority Police Department," he said.

"This is not negotiable and it is just common sense. We don’t second guess the Secret Service and our police department.”
