13-year-old girl shot, killed in Harlem

A gunman who killed a teenage girl and wounded an older woman survived a shootout with cops in Harlem Tuesday morning, police said.

The suspect, who was struck in the thigh and was expected to recover, was arrested. Police said he killed a girl believed to be 13. The other victim, shot in the head and believed to be in her 40s, was in critical condition at Harlem Hospital.

Two uniformed officers from the 32nd Precinct were taken to St. Luke's Hospital for treatment of psychological trauma.

The violence unfolded after police responded to a 3:27 a.m. call of two women shot inside a 12th floor apartment at the Polo Grounds Houses near W. 155th St. and Eighth Ave.

The officers encountered the suspect outside the building and fired at each other, cops said. A police source said the gunman and women appear to be related.
