3 haredim accused of collecting funds for fake kollel
Jerusalem police arrested three haredi males between the ages of 35-40 for operating a fake “kollel” or yeshiva for married men. The men allegedly duped the Education Ministry into paying the living allowance for dozens of full-time students, and received hundreds of thousands of shekels each year from the Education Ministry.
The suspects submitted lists of names and ID numbers of the students that were “enrolled” in their kollels to the ministry. Police detectives opened an investigation after one of the “students” received a message on his cell phone to come to the kollel for a inspection from the Education Ministry. The student had never learned in a kollel and had never heard of the institution, and filed a complaint with police.
The three suspects were arraigned on Tuesday morning in the Jerusalem Magistrates Court.
