Six US Marines killed after helicopter crashes in Afghanistan

KABUL -- Six US Marines were killed when their helicopter crashed in southern Afghanistan Thursday, FOX News Channel reported.

The six service personnel were members of NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).

Citing sources, FOX said the downed chopper was a CH-46 Sea Knight, while CBS News reported it was a CH-53.

The accident happened late Thursday, just before midnight local time, FOX reported.

"The cause of the crash is under investigation, however initial reporting indicates there was no enemy activity in the area at the time of the crash," ISAF said in a statement.

The organization did not specify the casualties' nationalities, adding, "It is ISAF policy to defer casualty identification procedures to the relevant national authorities and more information will be released as appropriate."

ISAF has secured the crash site in Helmand province, in Afghanistan's south.
