Indian court reportedly accepted claim that discharged soldier Nurit Toker was not aware of bullets found in her luggage at airport last October
The High Court in Mumbai dropped charges against Nurit Toker, the 22-year-old Israeli woman arrested at the Mumbai International Airport after bullet magazines were found in her luggage last October. The judges accepted a report by a police official who claimed Toker was not aware of the two magazines in her luggage and therefore could not determine guilt.
Gadi Toker, Nurit's uncle said Monday his niece is still in India and has yet to receive her passport.
India media reported that the panel rejected the claim that possession of weapons was sufficient grounds for arrest and prosecution. The Indian Express reported that the judges, who acknowledged the matter was an unfortunate mistake, ordered authorities to give the woman her passport back.
Earlier, Toker's lawyer noted in court that no one at Israel's airport mentioned the bullets when the recently discharged soldier departed for India and that the matter was also not brought up at the Mumbai Airport upon her landing. Only two days after her arrival in the country, when Toker planned to travel to Katmandu, did the authorities step in.
Earlier this month, Indian Supreme Court judges criticized the police claiming it was zigzagging in relation to the Israeli's case.
Toker, a 22-year-old discharged IDF officer, was arrested in late October during a security check at the Mumbai Airport. She was released on bail several days later but was prohibited from the leaving the country pending the completion of legal proceedings against her.
