New Jersey mayor resigns after escort website sex scandal,

Scandal: A male escort has claimed Chris Myers paid him $500 for sex and promised to buy him a new car and other gifts. He posted this picture on a website, claiming it was Myers in a hotel room

A website that turned up in October and then vanished alleged the mayor hired a male prostitute

The mayor of Medford, New Jersey, recently accused of having sex with a male prostitute, resigned on Monday, the Medford Sun reported.

Republican Chris Myers, a married father of two, was scandalized in October on a website that accused him of hiring the escort, and published a photo of a man in his underwear who appeared to be Myers.

The accuser, who says he is the prostitute Myers paid $500 to rendezvous at a hotel in Newport Beach, said he made the story public because the politician did not fulfill promises that included a car and gifts.

The website was taken down shortly after the story became public.

Myers denied the claims at a township council meeting in November and called the Internet "a murky, anonymous place."

"I deny the allegations," Myers said soon after the story broke. "Anyone can do what they want anonymously on the Internet."

In his resignation letter to town officials, Myers did not address the sex scandal.

"My work commitments will not allow me to devote the time that is needed in the months ahead," Myers wrote.

In the wake of the breaking allegations, Myers had reportedly missed one township meeting and postponed another, concerning council members of the 23,000-population city 20 miles east of Philadelphia, the Medford Sun said.

Jay Leno and Keith Olberman had made Myers the butt of jokes following website’s allegations.

Myers has also been suspended "indefinitely" as vice president at technology manufacturer Lockheed Martin Corp., a spokesperson for the company said in a statement.
