Madonna to perform during halftime of Super Bowl XLVI

Sporty girl: NBC confirmed Sunday night that Madonna will perform at this year's Super Bowl

It remains to be seen whether the Jets or Giants will make it to Indianapolis for Super Bowl XLVI, but The Material Girl will be there.

Madonna will perform at halftime of the NFL's biggest game on Feb. 5, the NFL and NBC announced on Sunday night. The move had been rumored for months, but was not made official until halftime of NBC's Lions-Saints game.

More than 162 million people in the U.S. watched The Black Eyed Peas' halftime performance during last year's Super Bowl at Cowboys Stadium, according to the Associated Press.

The Super Bowl halftime show always attracts big stars, with Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, U2 and Prince all performing in recent years.

Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake famously performed at Super Bowl XXXVIII in 2004, with Jackson suffering a "wardrobe malfunction."

It's a busy time for Madonna, who makes her much-anticipated directorial debut with "W.E.", which opens two days before the Super Bowl. The iconic singer and performer will also release a new album in 2012.
