NY Doctor arrested for illegally selling prescriptions

Dr. Stan Xuhui Li is arraigned at Manhattan Supreme Court after being charged with 15 counts of criminal sale of a prescription for a controlled substance and five counts of second-degree reckless endangerment

FLUSHING - A Queens physician is accused of illegally selling prescriptions for controlled substances from a pain management clinic he operated in Flushing.

Police arrested Stan Xuhui Li at the clinic, Medical Pain Management, over the weekend on charges of illegal prescription drug sales and reckless endangerment.

The charges are tied to the overdose death of Michael Cornetta a year ago.

The Queens resident allegedly received dozens of prescriptions for multiple controlled substances from Li between May 2009 and August 2010, and overdosed at least two times during this period. He eventually died of an overdose in November 2010 at the age of 40.

Special Narcotics is investigating Li's sale of prescriptions to other patients, including nine individuals who suffered fatal drug overdoses since January 2009.

What he billed his patients for the visits and the funds he obtained from government health insurance programs, including Medicare and Medicaid are also under investigation.

Newsday detailed how convicted murderer David Laffer prescription-shopped before killing four people during a Long Island pharmacy robbery. It said Laffer filled 24 prescriptions from Li.

The name of Li's attorney was not immediately known.
