Robert Core

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. - A Long Island public safety officer was arrested and charged after he fatally struck a 50-year-old man on the Hempstead Turnpike late Thursday.

According to authorities, Robert Core, 42, of Hempstead, was behind the wheel of a Town of Hempstead Department of Public Safety patrol car when he struck the victim who was crossing the turnpike just outside of the Nassau University Medical Center at around 11:30 p.m.

The victim, who was not immediately identified, was rushed to the hospital by a volunteer ambulance crew that heard the crash and was just departing the medical center. The victim was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Core, who has worked with the Town of Hempstead's Public Safety Department for over 10 years, was charged with vehicular manslaughter and DWI. Officials say he has been suspended from the department without pay pending the outcome of the criminal investigation.
