Jewish Upper East Side man charged with murder after stabbing elderly mother to death in Park Ave apartment

Jonathan Schwartz, 41, is led from precinct after arrest in slaying of his mother

An elderly upper East Side woman was viciously stabbed to death yesterday by her unemployed son who often hassled her for money, cops and a relative said.

The body of Barbara Schwartz, 67, was found inside her E. 85th St. home near Park Ave. shortly before 5 p.m., police said.

Her son, Jonathan Schwartz, 41, was cuffed at the scene and taken into custody.

"I just can't believe it," said a relative. "She loved him, because he's her son - but he gave her some problems."

The relative, who asked not to be identified, said Jonathan mooched off his mother, who inherited her wealth from her late father, financial big Norman Weiden.

"She did not have an easy time with her children," the relative said. "Jonathan wasn't working. He was spoiled."

Sources said her son had a history of psychological problems, but it was not immediately clear what exactly sparked the killing inside the seventh-floor apartment.

Barbara Schwartz was head of Weiden Schwartz Fischler Family Foundation, which funds acts of philanthropy, voluntarism and grant-making.

"She was a very gentle person," said the relative, who called Schwartz "a wonderful mother."

Her son was later charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon.
