Police responded to the home just after 3:30 p.m. on Sunday after Powell allegedly refused to report to police headquarters for violating a restraining order, according to the Piscataway Police Department.

Powell told responding officers that he was holding hostages and police cordoned off the streets and evacuated the residential neighborhood. At approximately 6:48 p.m., Powell stepped onto his front porch and fired multiple shots from a 9-millimeter submachine gun. Officer returned fire and Powell went back into the home.

Police stayed in contact with Powell and determined that there were no hostages. A police robot was sent up to the house at about midnight. After determining it was safe for police to secure the home.

They found Powell dead in the home of an apparent gunshot wound, according to the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office. An autopsy is pending to figure out if the shot came from Powell's gun or from one of the officers outside of the home.

Officers remained at the scene throughout Monday morning gathering evidence.
