Englewood, NJ - Prominent Orthodox Doctor Killed by Hit-N-Run Driver While Walking to Shul

A 57-year-old anesthesiologist was struck and killed by an SUV as he was crossing Broad Avenue on his way to a synagogue service on Friday, authorities said.

Dr. Paul Kudowitz was taken to Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, said Chief Arthur O’Keefe of the Englewood police.

Police were searching for the SUV, which fled the scene after the accident, heading southbound on Broad Avenue.

Witnesses described it as a large, older model, SUV, possibly a Chevrolet Suburban, said Chief Arthur O’Keefe of the Englewood police. The SUV most likely has front-end damage, he said.

The accident was reported just after 5:30 p.m. near the intersection of Broad Avenue and Allison Court, O’Keefe said.

O’Keefe said he did not know what Kudowitz’s specialty was or where he practiced medicine, but an Internet search yielded several listings for an anesthesiologist named Paul Kudowitz who worked in Astoria, N.Y.

Police did not say where Kudowitz planned to attend services, but Congregation Ahavath Torah is located just three blocks from the accident scene.

Kudowitz, who also worked from an office in Astoria, Queens, was an active member of the Aleh Foundation, which helps disabled children in Israel. He leaves a wife, Ricki, 56, and a daughter, Robyn.

  1. BDE....so many of these tragic accidents recently. Very few of the streets in this area have traffic signals or active crosswalks and the sad truth is that many of us are in such a rush to get to and from shul in the winter months when it gets dark early, we don't take the time to cross safely.
