Wrong way drunk driver, Pablo Ovalles, kills another driver in crash on Major Deegan Expressway

A drunken driver sped the wrong way on the Major Deegan Expressway in the Bronx early Saturday, killing the driver of another car in a grisly head-on collision, police said.

A Cadillac Escalade with Pablo Ovalles, 26, behind the wheel roared north on the southbound side of the highway and crashed into an Infiniti sedan just before the Fordham Rd. exit, police said.

The horrific 3:45 a.m. wreck left the Infiniti mangled almost beyond recognition and killed its 42-year-old driver instantly.

The Escalade spun out and slammed into a guardrail, where firefighters cut Ovalles from the crumpled vehicle.

He was taken to Lincoln Hospital in stable condition and then placed under arrest, police said.

Ovalles, who lives in Boston, was charged with driving while intoxicated with additional charges pending, police said.

The identity of the Infiniti's driver was not released pending the notification of his family, police said.

Investigators were not immediately certain which onramp Ovalles took or how long he was driving the wrong way on the expressway, police said.
