Member of Mayor Bloomberg's security detail accused of shooting gal pal's ex-boyfriend

NYPD vet Leopold McLean has been placed on modified duty and stripped of his gun and badge

A member of Mayor Bloomberg's security detail was bounced from his post after he allegedly shot his gal pal's ex-boyfriend while off duty, police sources said.

Leopold McLean, a 17-year NYPD veteran, was placed on modified duty and stripped of his gun and badge after the incident.

Investigators are looking into circumstances surrounding the shooting and whether McLean lied about what happened, the sources said.

A Queens grand jury is expected to hear the case.

The shooting happened after McLean's girlfriend summoned him to her Queens home because an ex-boyfriend kept calling and threatening to come over - in violation of a court order, sources said.

McLean, a member of the mayor's advance team but not a bodyguard, was at the house when the enraged ex showed up and things got heated, sources said.

"There was a fight inside and it got taken outside," a police source said.

What happened next is in dispute.

McLean, 46, allegedly told NYPD Internal Affairs investigators the other man became irate and came at him with a knife, sources said.

He said he was forced to shoot his rival, hitting him in the leg.

Forensic evidence - including the angle of the wound - did not match McLean's account that the man was lunging at him when he was shot, sources said.

Sources said the leg wound suggested the other man, whose name was not disclosed, was running away, sources said.

McLean declined to comment last night when reached by phone.

He is a former member of the NYPD football team and a former community affairs officer in Queens' 113th Precinct.

The wounded man fled but later contacted the Civilian Complaint Review Board, claiming he was shot by a high-ranking cop.

NYPD Internal Affairs tracked him down at Jamaica Hospital.

A police spokesman confirmed there is an investigation but declined to comment Tuesday night.

  1. It's a shame that a nut job can stalk an innocent woman for 5 years and someone come to her defense and be looked at as a criminal

  2. Why hasn't the ex-boyfriend been arrested for violating the order of protection?

  3. Is anyone protecting the victim(woman who was attacked), because obviously the police are not.

  4. Help me understand what system of justice we live under that punishes heros and rewards felons. This cop was obviously protecting a victim of a crime, so why is he being attacked by the same people he works for?

  7. This cop was an a*shole because he was probably being played just like the other guy. The funniest thing here is that everyone sees this woman as a victim when she could have possibly been the cause..The cop is in trouble because he lied and if he was doing the right thing for the right reason he would have reported the fact that he shot at the ex... THINK PEOPLE People getmad and say cops think there above the law but what if the guy died would he have told the truth or a more extravagant lie..
