Israeli, Dubai police officials meet in UAE

Pleasant meeting. Segalovich

Shook hands. Khalfan

Head of police investigations unit Major-General Yoav Segalovich runs into Dubai Police Chief Dahi Khalfan during Interpol conference. 'Meeting was pleasant despite tensions,' says police official

The diplomatic row between Israel and Dubai has not undermined relations between the two states' law enforcement apparatuses.

Last week, Qatar hosted the annual Interpol General Assembly, which was attended by top law enforcement echelons from around the world.

Israel, which also took part in the event, was represented by Head of the police investigations unit Major-General Yoav Segalovich and head of the police special assignment department Commander Guy Nir.

The hosting country was represented by Police Commander Dahi Khalfan Tamim, who is well remembered for his unleashing criticism of Israel following the assassination of Hamas senior member Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, allegedly orchestrated by Mossad agents.

During the four-day conference, Segalovich and Khalfan crossed paths and held a short conversation. "They met randomly," a police official said on Sunday.

"They were introduced, they shook hands and greeted each other," the source noted, adding that the meeting was pleasant despite rising tensions between the Arab Emirate and the Jewish State.

In January 2010, Mabhouh was assassinated while staying in a luxury hotel in Dubai.

The local police, headed by Khalfan, accused Israel of the act, and later published 27 pictures of suspects, taken by the hotel surveillance camera.

Dubai claimed Mossad agents used fake passports of Israeli and European nationals in order to execute the hit. Following a request by the Dubai police, Interpol later issued arrest warrants against the suspects.

"The Mossad shouldn't have come to us. We didn't do anything to Israel. It is an insult for us," Khalfan stated at the time, warning that Israelis will be barred from entering Dubai in the future.
